Literally Lenny

Lover of all books, big or small, old or new. I read and review books in the Young Adult genre. Welcome to my blog and I hope you stick around for more to come!

Genre: Murder Mystery
Quick Synopsis: Two siblings separated after a massive family abuse case, and now the older brother, an accused murderer, is on the loose with every intention of finding his long-lost little sister.

Overall Review:

I cannot imagine this book being written any better than it was. This is the first time I have read a book by Lisa Gardner but I am certainly impressed.

This book was everything a good thriller should be: Mysterious, disturbing, and not one bit predictable. The reader is constantly left second guessing.

This book reminded me a little of Stephen King and his writing style for Mr. Mercedes actually. Both writers were able to keep things light and at times humorous, while also being incredibly disturbing.

I love the direction this book went with the plot, and I love how this book ended. It wasn’t necessarily a happy ending, but as much of a happy ending as a mystery thriller can afford to have after a mass murder occurs in a small town.

Genre: Historial & Futuristic Fiction
Quick Synopsis: Three women from different time periods find their connection with each other through time.

Overall Review:

Excellent book with a great plot. This book is focused around 3 women from 3 different time periods, and you soon find how they are all linked together through time. A fascinating read with the perfect amount of detail per character; just enough that you feel like you know the person, but not too much where all you’re reading are useless facts.

The stories took you into three different time periods: Post World War 1 in England, The Dust Bowl in Kansas, and Pre-Mars Settlement in Kansas.

The writer did a great job at tying all three stories together realistically, where it didn’t seem like it was a stretch by any means for these events to happen. I can tell that the author also did a lot of research herself into post-world war 1 and the dust bowl because everything seemed to be very realistic and not embellished by any means.

Not to mention, I like the tiny little tid bit she put in there about climate change. She never directly said it, but she implied that cities were under water and that was the sudden need to settle Mars. Being a weather nerd, I liked this added bit because in all honesty, that could actually be reality in our future.

Genre: YA Fantasy & Contemporary
Quick Synopsis: Group of teenage witches meet tragedy, while also dealing with love, family, and self-discovery.

Overall Review:

A group of three witches living in the “muggle world”, trying to get through the awkward years of being a teen while also being a witch. But then a tragedy happens, and they have to learn how to deal with grief as well as family, love, and their relationships. It’s a complicated balance that they have to learn at probably the worst time in their lives. It’s not just about witches, and it’s not just about teenagers, it’s a perfect mix of the two. The combination adds so much more to this book. It had so much going on without being overbearing.  The plot was amazing. I didn’t read much of the synopsis before I started this, so I went into it thinking one thing, and was completely upended halfway through.

My only negative would be that there wasn’t enough “witchy” things. I wanted more involvement from their witch culture. I loved this book mainly for the witch portion because that’s what sets this book apart from every other contemporary read. It added a twist that was fun and not done very often. It started off really strong, but then died down (for obvious reasons) but it was also like it wasn’t mentioned at all.  So little that I even forgot they were witches at points.

Overall though, this book was fantastic. It was fun and unique, and definitely a book you should read.

Book Count: 5
Pages Count: 1,897
Star Count: 21/25

Overall,  a decent reading month for me! Collectively, I read 5 books, all yielding a total of 21/25 Stars.

First up, I read Right Behind You, a murder mystery involving two siblings who were separated after a massive family abuse case. Except now, the older brother is on the loose after murdering two people at the town's gas station, with the intention of finding his long-lost little sister.

I gave this 5-Stars. It's a must read!

Next up, I read Midnight at the Electric, a historical/futuristic novel about the ties between three women across three time periods.

I gave this 5-Stars for being like nothing i've ever read before!

Third, I read Once and For All, a highly anticipated Sarah Dessen novel about a teenage girl finding herself again after a bad breakup. Through her mother's wedding planning business, she meets a boy who tests her and opens her eyes to the world.

I gave this 4-Stars because Sarah Dessen is a goddess and knows how to pull all of the feel cords.

Then there was Our Dark Duet, the sequel to This Savage Song, a book that I gave 4-Stars. This series is about monsters attempting to live among humans. It works for a while with a business tyrant, but quickly falls apart when two teens meet; ones a monster, ones the business tyrant's daughter. This concept could have been executed incredibly, but sadly the sequel to this was awful. I couldn't wait for it to be over. It lacked excitement, character development, and the plot was just lacking substance.

Overall, I gave this book 2-Stars.

Finally, I read Bad Romance, a contemporary romance turned drama. This book was fantastic because it started off seeming like a nice love story, but things soon turned dark. In what became an abusive relationship, we see what it's like to be the abusee; a perspective that I think is highly needed in society today. I feel that this is a book that everyone needs to read, to at least understand difficult situations such as these, and how to help these people. Because sometimes, the obvious choice is not the easiest.

Overall, I gave this 5-Stars because it's an essential book that everyone needs to read. Now.
