Literally Lenny

Lover of all books, big or small, old or new. I read and review books in the Young Adult genre. Welcome to my blog and I hope you stick around for more to come!

My Thoughts:

Unfortunately one of my least favorite historical fiction reads. I did not have any problems with the historical accuracy, but more so the realism. For example, there is one scene where a German is detained and two soldiers are trying to kill him, so to start they put one bullet to his chest; he’s still breathing and talking. Two more bullets to the chest; he’s still breathing. Two more to the chest; he’s still breathing. Ok, one more bullet; German dies. Now, I’m not trying to claim that I have a broad understanding on ballistics by any means, but this scene was dragged out immensely for something that seemed so over the top and unrealistic.

Storyline:

Set during the onset of World War II, following four different characters and how their lives intertwine  with each other. One is a soldier, one is a teacher, one is a supervisor.

My Thoughts:

This was a great mystery/thriller if you’re just looking a quick read. It was just in depth enough to whisk you away, but not too much to confuse you into oblivion.

Parts of the story really aggravated me because there were a lot of times where if she just used her brain a little bit, things could’ve gone a hell lot better. She was the cause of her on downfall multiple times. You continuously saw her walking into her own demise and couldn’t do anything but watch it happen.

Storyline:

The beginning was gripping and intense which I wrongly thought was where the conflict started. However, that truly was just the beginning and that tragedy became her downfall in the end.

Lo Blacklock is a journalist who gets the “break of a lifetime” at her job and gets to spend a week reporting on a luxury cruise line. However, due to her previous tragedy, she becomes paranoid and attracted to every bit of danger.  While aboard, Lo witnesses a murder, or so she thinks. Because of her recent past she becomes an unreliable narrator.

What's it about?

"Summer for Sasha and Ray means the sprawling old house on Long Island. Since they were children, they’ve shared almost everything—reading the same books, running down the same sandy footpaths to the beach, eating peaches from the same market, laughing around the same sun-soaked dining table. Even sleeping in the same bed, on the very same worn cotton sheets. But they’ve never met.

The choices we make come back to haunt us; the effect on our destinies ripples out of our control…or does it? This summer, the lives of Sasha, Ray, and their siblings intersect in ways none of them ever dreamed, in a novel about family relationships, keeping secrets, and most of all, love." - Goodreads Synopsis

My Thoughts:

This reminded me a lot of We Were Liars and I think that’s why I didn’t enjoy it so much. It just seemed like something I had already read. Granted, there are many differences between the two, but the whole “rich family drama” thing was very much the same. I guess I struggle enjoying those types of plots because I in no way can relate to anything that is going on. Nor do I even have any ounce of sympathy for rich people and their family dramas.

Storyline:

I really enjoyed the relationship that formed between Ray and Sasha, as it was them against their family. But that’s almost where my enjoyment for the book ended. I had a really hard time getting through this book because it was just so difficult to read. There were too many characters, too many jumps in scenes with no introduction, and it was really difficult to keep track of what was happening with who.

Overall, I gave this book 2/5 stars. I had really high hopes for this, but alas, it felt short and I was left disappointed.
