Literally Lenny

Lover of all books, big or small, old or new. I read and review books in the Young Adult genre. Welcome to my blog and I hope you stick around for more to come!

What's it about?

"Seventeen-year-old Delilah Green wouldn't have chosen to do her last year of school this way, but she figures it's working fine. While her dad goes on a trip to fix his broken heart after her mom left him for another man, Del manages the family cafe. Easy, she thinks. But what about homework? Or the nasty posse of mean girls making her life hell? Or her best friend who won't stop guilt-tripping her? Or her other best friend who might go to jail for love if Del doesn't do something? But really, who cares about any of that when all Del can think about is beautiful Rosa who dances every night across the street. . . . Until one day Rosa comes in the cafe door. And if Rosa starts thinking about Del, too, then how in the name of caramel milkshakes will Del get the rest of it together?"-Goodreads Synopsis

My Thoughts:

I really wanted to love this book, solely because it was a diverse book and the world can never have too many of those. However, I really did not like this book. The plot was good, but the details and characters were awful.

Storyline:

First off, the writing was confusing... Explanation of where her father was in beginning was unclear. Was he home or was he abroad? And why would he willingly leave his 17 year old daughter alone for months at a time? That literally would never happen with any parent who actually cares for their child.

The background of her mother was just left alone. We got no information for why she really left, when she left, or why she is just so damn rude. They make it seem like her father is “all of the sudden” depressed, but it seems like Delilah’s mother has been gone for a WHILE.

Also. What lawyer gives legal documents to a 17 year old and trusts an entire business in their hands? This is so implausible! It drove me mad!

The entire “cast” of characters acted as if they were all adults completely capable of taking care of themselves, even though they were still in high school. I’m sorry, but i’m 23 and still trying to figure out how to take care of myself without my parents help. Come on.

Then there was this quote: "He could always break the lease if he really wanted to. Or start a cafe somewhere else. You're the kid! You need to think about what you want as well."

Wait, what? No. You’re the child. You can’t freaking rent away your father’s cafe without telling him anything! And don’t freaking encourage someone to break a legal document. Seriously? Delilah wasn’t even on the lease, and I doubt even in Australia that’s legal to have a 17 year old sell away her father’s property. Come on.

Characters:

I really, really disliked Delilah.

She's literally going on a destructive spree...Ruining everything she has in her life. And now it just seems like it's on purpose and it's driving me mad.

Delilah's thought process towards Rosa is so incredibly naive and selfish. Like I get that rejection sucks but she also should understand that some people are not comfortable yet with their sexuality. She's upset with Rosa because she isn't comfortable with her family knowing that she is gay and that's perfectly okay because this is not a subject to be handled gently. I wish that it was easy for people to be open about but the fact of the matter is is that it's not even with increasing acceptance across the globe.

Oh. And June's a bitch. That is all.

What's it about?

"Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world."

My Thoughts:

I'm going to keep this review short and sweet as I'm not even really sure what my entire thoughts are on it...
I'm confused because of two things:
  1. I BLEW through this book. It had absolutely NO CHANCE at lasting more than a week. I couldn't put it down.
  2. There was nothing AMAZING about this book, other than the unusual setting and plot.  Otherwise, it was just another historical fiction YA book.

That being said, I gave this book 3/5 stars for what I can assume is because of the fantastic writing, but also for the lackluster storyline.

Characters:

Audrey was a major badass. I loved her character so much because she didn't listen to anything a man told her to do, which in 1888 was practically a freaking sin. *Eye roll* Her confidence never got ahead of her to the point where it was her own downfall, but she also wasn't a baby complaining about how incompetent she was or how oppressed she was by men.

Thomas: I couldn't get over his conceited attitude as it just kept reminding me of someone I very much disliked...And that just ruined it for me. His character development seemed far fetched to me only because he went from loving himself, to being head over heels for Audrey. Realistically, it didn't make sense.

What's it about?

"Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother's web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner."

My Thoughts:

I'm going to start by saying that this was one of my most anticipated books of 2017. And while it was a good book (I gave it 3.5 stars), it did not live up to my (probably too high) expectations. Here's why:

In the previous two books, there was always so much going on that it was nearly impossible to get bored with the book. This one however just did not deliver that. I actually got bored reading this...It's more than likely because each event was dragged out too much, or because Mare had nearly no interaction with any other characters until the very end.

I'm really disappointed that I wasn't blown away by this book. It was great plot and characters as usual, but it just had SO much filler I feel....I don't know. Not to mention the ending was awful...I get Cal's intentions, but if that's actually how he feels and those are his priorities, mare deserves so much more.

Okay. Enough negativity. Now here's what I DID like:

Characters:

The characters. I bloody love how the author developed each one. I really enjoyed being able to see into Evangeline's mind and see what she was really thinking. She might have been my favorite actually because she's known for being evil, but she is just severely oppressed by every man in her life. And for that, I do not blame her one bit.

As for Mare, she's kickass, yes. But she also bothers me because she's very stubborn and headstrong...She doesn't admit to her own weaknesses and I feel like things would go A LOT SMOOTHER if she just had a bit more humility.

Then there's Cal. I love Cal. But I hate Cal. I think he's confused with what he actually wants in life and that causes his thinking to be faulty. He loves Mare, quite clearly, but he also still loves his family and kingdom, despite all of their flaws. If he could just figure his own shit out, thatd be awesome.

Overall, I have this book a 3.5 stars...it was a great book, but like I said, I really wish I liked it more. It was just another book in the series to me, and it had a lot more potential.
